Avena Bella

Location:
Turlock, CA
Scope:
New 80-unit affordable housing lowrise development with community facilities
Achievements:

Targeting Green Point Rated & LEED Homes

This new affordable housing community consists of eight Mediterranean-style buildings, a mix of garden-style walk-up apartments and double-loaded corridor buildings. It also includes a community center, pool, and computer lab with after school support for youth. It features generous green and open space areas, including a community garden and strategically placed trees that will help shade both indoor and outdoor living spaces. Ultimate Air Recouperator energy-recovery ventilation units (ERVs) are provided for every dwelling unit, which will minimize unwanted heat loss (when it's cold outside) and heat gain (when it's hot outside) while providing optimal indoor air quality--especially important given the project's placement on busy Highway 99. The typical approach for achieving code-minimum ventilation for similar projects is to provide continuous exhaust from a bathroom coupled with Z-ducts or window trickle vents to provide a hopeful path for unfiltered, untempered makeup air. We believe this is the first project of its size in California to incorporate heat recovery.

In addition to green consulting and rating services, our team also provided energy optimization studies and California Utility Allowance calculations. The project is under construction and will be completed in the fall of 2013.
